HAVE YOU HERD?
A game that saw 12 ties and 14 lead changes ended in heartbreaking fashion for the Thundering Herd, as it fell in overtime to the Rice Owls, Jan. 18, at Tudor Fieldhouse. Despite being outrebounded, 41-35, Marshall dominated in the paint, with 40 points to Rice's 22. Leah Scott (Detroit) ended with 18 points, her sixth-consecutive game in double-digits. Suporia Dickens (Freeport, Ill.) and Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) also finished in double digits, with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
The last time the Herd went into overtime was last season at Tudor Fieldhouse, when Marshall fell, 71-61 (Feb. 24, 2013). The Herd hasn't won an overtime game since Dec. 2, 2010, when Marshall defeated George Washington, 64-61, after double overtime.
CHANGING IT UP
Coach Matt Daniel has started eight different combinations over 17 games, and five of the Herd's seven wins have come with different starting lineups. No Herd player has started all 17 games, however, Scott has started all but two games. Twelve of Marshall's 14 active players have made at least one start this season.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
The Herd's offense has found success across its roster, as seven different players have led the team in scoring this season. Scott tops all Herd scorers with 12.6 points per game. Four different players have led the team in rebounding, with Dickens currently topping the charts with 7.2 boards per game.
BLOCKS IN THE BOOKS
With one swat versus Tulane, Jan. 9, junior Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) moved into a three-way tie for 12th place in the Marshall record book for career blocked shots (55). She needs five more to tie 11th-place holder Deanna Carter, who blocked 60 from 1978-82.
Ezeigbo's 36 blocks last season are tied for eighth place in Herd history, and her seven swats versus Indiana State (Nov. 12, 2012) are the fifth-most in a single game at Marshall.
MAKING HERD HISTORY
This season, three Marshall players have inked their names into the Herd record book: junior AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), freshman McKenzie Akers (Princeton, W.Va.), and Victrum.
Johnson made five three-pointers against UAB, Jan. 11, tying the third-place Herd record for threes made in a single game. Johnson also became the ninth player in Marshall history to attempt the second-most three pointers in a single game when she shot 11 versus Navy, Dec. 29. In addition, she and Akers both attempted 10 threes in a game this season, tying for eighth place in the record book.
Marshall's 71-56 defeat of Wofford (Dec. 19) saw two records, with Johnson going 4-of-5 from behind the arc (.800), the sixth-best performance in Herd history. Victrum went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe versus the Terriers, good for ninth-most free throws made in a single game at Marshall. Her mark is also a single-game high under coach Matt Daniel.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Last time out, Tulsa (8-7, 2-2) went 1-1 in league play at home, falling to UAB, 76-65, and defeating FIU, 78-73. When playing on the road, the team is 2-4, overall; 1-1 in Conference USA. The Golden Hurricane defense is averaging a league high of 71.4 points allowed per game, and ranks last in the conference for blocked shots per game (1.3).
Three players average double digits for the Hurricane offense, as Ashley Clark leads the pack with 14.6 points per game, followed by Kelsee Grovey (11.5) and Mariah Turner (10.1). Clark also boasts team highs of 6.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
Marshall leads the all-time series with Tulsa, 5-3, winning five of the last six meetings. Last season, the Herd dropped a 67-49 decision in Tulsa (Jan. 17, 2013), despite outscoring the Hurricane in the second half.
