HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team completed its first day at the West Virginia State Games and finished with three top ten school records at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Huntington, W.Va.
AT THE WEST VIRGINIA STATE GAMES
Marshall's 200 Freestyle Relay team led West Virginia going into the final leg. The team would go on to just get touched out by the Mountaineers at the last moment.
In the 500 Freestyle, Senior Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va,) was able to shave a full eight seconds off of her freestyle from last year's West Virginia State Games.
Freshman Nele Albers (Ludinghausen, Germany) made her Marshall debut and finished second in two of the events she raced in.
TRAMEL TALK
Head Coach Bill Tramel on Friday night's events:
"Just a fantastic night. The first relay really set the tone. We were over a second faster than our shaved, tapered and suited relay time from last year's Conference Championships. Considering this is our first time out this year, it really leaves us excited and optimistic for the season."
"We also had three swims that were All-Time Top Ten performances in school history tonight. And we've only done three individual events."
"The critical thing now is to show up tomorrow morning. That's what we will need to do at championship meets. But tonight, we are thrilled with our swims."
HELMICH'S HEADLINES
Diving Coach Andrew Helmich on Divers:
"Overall the divers had a great night, everyone was focused in on making the correct changes on each dive which puts them in a great spot going forward."
"I fully expect them continue to improve from here at a dramatic rate and tomorrow I expect them to step up in a big way on 1 meter."
