HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall tennis will continue its fall season by heading back to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional, held in Blacksburg, Va., from Oct. 17-21.

The Herd will have two competitors in Main Draw Singles and one pair in Main Draw Doubles. Marshall could face competition from teams such as Virginia, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and Maryland. There are a 22 teams competing in the regional.

"We're really excited that Kai [Broomfield] and Derya [Turhan] are getting the opportunity to play in main draw singles and main draw doubles," Herd coach John Mercer said. "That's huge for a regional. This is a good opportunity for them; they've been playing really well this fall. It's great that they were seeded in doubles; that shows a lot of respect for how they have been playing lately."

Lone senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) will be traveling to Blacksburg. The duo will pair up for the first time in doubles competition, and will not begin play until Saturday due to being seeded in the main draw.

Broomfield is coming off a strong finish at the Hokie Fall Invitational in early October, and Turhan won the title in the Blue Flight Doubles last weekend at the UVa Invitational with partner Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia).

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION

Virginia ended the 2014 Spring season ranked seventh nationally, Virginia Tech finished No. 56, and Maryland No. 73. All three teams will have at least five players in main draw singles this weekend.

In the Atlantic region, the three were the top to close the spring campaign. Marshall followed closely with a fourth place regional ranking.
