HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall University's swimming and diving team finished 1-1 in its first road trip of the 2014-15 season against UNC Asheville and Gardner Webb in Asheville, N.C. Marshall defeated UNC Asheville 187-75, while the Herd lost 152-110 to Gardner Webb. Two swimmers were able to win events for the Herd on the day, in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle.
AGAINST GARDNER WEBB AND UNC ASHEVILLE
Senior Kacey Preun (St. Andrews, Manitoba) won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.12, almost a second faster than the second place swimmer. Preun also finished second in the 1000 freestyle.
The other win for the Herd came from freshman Gloriya Mavrova (Alexandria, Virginia), who just edged out second place Ashley Ireland of UNC Asheville with a score of 24.66. Mavrova additionally finished second in the 100 freestyle race.
TRAMEL TALK
Head Coach Bill Tramel on UNC Asheville and Gardner Webb:
"We started well and were up by a point at halftime (66-65). Then we went to sleep. We talked about coming out of the intermission strong. Instead, we came out with very little enthusiasm while Gardner-Webb came out excited to win. It was clear who wanted to get their hand on the wall first and it wasn't us. Asheville also showed a passion to finish close races. They got us on some touch outs too. Both our opponents had teammates cheering and supporting each other. We were just sitting quietly watching Marshall get beat."
"This Marshall team has potential, but we can't just think we can show up and be successful. We need to focus on our details, race strategy, and have more of a will to win. We didn't do that today, and that's why we came out on the short end. Now this is a young team, about 75 percent freshman and sophomore, but we can't use that as an excuse. We need to figure this out quickly, or we will have the same result next time out."
