HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
In its next to last home and regular season match, the Marshall men's soccer team (6-8-3, 3-4-1) defeated the Asbury Eagles (8-10, 2-2) by a score of 4-0 at Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
AGAINST THE EAGLES
Marshall got started early, creating plenty of chances. In the 10th minute, freshman Christian Kershaw (Severna Park, M.D.) played in a corner kick that was nodded down by junior Nick Edginton (Wellington, New Zealand) to junior Austin Klueh (Loveland, Ohio) who steered a shot into the near post from six yards out. The goal was Klueh's first career tally for Marshall.
In the 15th minute, freshman Scott Doney (Tauranga, New Zealand) was tripped up in the box, drawing a penalty. Sophomore Ryan Forde (London, England) converted the spot kick for his second goal of the season.
In the 69th minute, senior forward/goalkeeper Danny Sellitti (Las Vegas, N.V.) received a pass from junior Jack Hopkins (Birmingham, Ala.). Sellitti was able to cross the ball to an open Edginton at the far post for a headed goal, Edginton's first of the season.
The scoring was rounded out with an own goal by the Eagles.
THE GRAY AREA
Marshall coach Bob Gray on Asbury match:
"I was glad that we got an early goal and the second, but we should have got a few more. Still, this was a big game for our possession and our confidence. We'll take the win."
Gray on preparation for Conference USA Tournament Nov. 12-16 in Norfolk, Va.
"It worked out perfectly, that's not how we originally intended it that we have a couple of matches here now to prepare for the Conference USA tournament. It's good for our fitness, our touches and things like that."
