Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - In its final home game and regular season match, the Marshall men's soccer team (7-8-3, 3-4-1) defeated the Concord Mountain Lions (2-11-1, 2-10) by a score of 4-1 at Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The game was senior day for Marshall's Danny Sellitti (Las Vegas, N.V.).
AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
The Herd was able to strike first in the 14th minute from a corner kick by freshman Christian Kershaw (Severna Park, M.D.). Kershaw's corner came to the head of sophomore Trevor Starcher (Hurricane, W.Va.) who nodded the ball down to sophomore Ryan Forde (London, England). Forde, who transferred from Concord this past season, scored his third goal of the season with a blast to the far post.
Marshall would get on the board again in the 35th minute. Junior Jack Hopkins (Birmingham, Ala.) unlocked Kershaw on the right wing. Kershaw whipped in a cross that found Ian Lovern (Bluefield, W.Va.) at the far post for a tap-in. The goal was the first of Lovern's Marshall career.
Just one minute and 16 seconds into the second half, Starcher was able to steal the ball from the Mountain Lions goalkeeper Mitchell Thompson and convert an easy tap-in with no pressure from the empty net, his second goal in the last three games and second of the season.
In the 64th minute, Marshall was awarded a penalty kick opportunity after Alex Williams brought down Starcher in the box on an open goal chance, receiving a yellow card in the process. However, Hopkins was unable to convert the spot kick.
Huntington native Maximillian Simpson would get on the board with a free kick in the 86th minute to make the score 3-1. Less than one minute later, Kershaw received a pass from junior Nick Edginton and smashed home a shot from six yards to round at the scoring at 4-1.
THE GRAY AREA
Marshall coach Bob Gray on Concord match:
"It was a good game for us, Concord was feisty and they played hard and made us move the ball around, we made a lot of offensive chances and overall I'm pleased"
