HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 14 Marshall Men's Soccer Team (10-2-4, 6-1-2 SBC) earned its second Sun Belt Conference Championship on Tuesday night with a 3-0 clean sheet over Old Dominion at Hoops Family Field.
The Herd will be the second seed in the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Championship with West Virginia holding the tiebreaker for the first seed on conference game goal differential.
"I mean it was fantastic. We executed the game plan," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "They're a good team, well coached and they have their own style, introduced a lot of chaos into the game. I thought we handled those moments well, and then just got down and played."
Marshall came out firing to start the match with Ramado Pierre-Louis and Goncalo Machado having shots on goal in the first 2:08 of the game, but both attempts were saved by ODU's Logan Bellina.
Then in the 25th minute, Nikita Pahkomov dumped a pass to Stan Klaver. Klaver followed with a pass into Carl Romberg who scored his fifth goal of the season to make it 1-0 for the Herd.
Alan Horrocks stopped a Lewis Rourke attempt at the 37:24 mark to send MU into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Out of the break Romberg didn't wait long to get a brace. Thiago Apolinario sent an over the top pass to Romberg, who cut into the 18-yard box and doubled Marshall's lead, 2-0, on his sixth goal of the year at the 57:16 mark.
Horrocks followed by making saves in the 60th, 72nd and 77th minutes to keep the Monarchs off the board.
Then in the 84th minute, Alvaro Alvarez sent in a corner and found the head of Luka Lucic as scored his first goal of the season to seal the match at 3-0.
Horrocks picked up his third clean sheet and extended his record to 7-0-1.
