CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) led the Marshall tennis team on the first day of the College of Charleston challenge, defeating Silvia Garcia of Georgia. Garcia is ranked no. 9 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

"Derya [Turhan] did a great job competing," head coach John Mercer said of Turhan's victory. "There were some tough points in the match where she faced some big adversity that she was able to battle through. She maintained her level of play the whole match, and it was great to see that improvement. She keeps getting better week to week."

Turhan trumped her competitor by a 7-6(4), 6-0 score. Fellow sophomore Anne Gulsrud (Stavenger, Norway) added another win to the Marshall total, defeating College of Charleston's Grace Baker 7-6(2), 6-0.

The Herd fell in the rest of its singles matches; Marshall freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won her first set against nationally ranked UGA player Mariana Gould 6-7(6), but was forced to retire in her second set due to an injury.

In doubles action, the duo of Silver and sophomore Rachael Morales defeated College of Charleston's Jones/Maddox 8-4 and a tandem of senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) defeated Baker/Nyikos, also of CofC, 8-3.

Turhan and partner Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) battled in doubles, but fell 8-6.

Marshall returns to the court Saturday, taking on Georgia State in pairs and College of Charleston in singles.
