Marshall Swimming and Diving Heads to Akron

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After its historic first win in program history against Ohio University, Marshall's swimming and diving team will make the trek to Akron, Ohio, for the three-day Zippy Invitational from Friday to Sunday.



The event comes 21 days after the Ohio win and will be the last meet of the 2014 calendar year. The Herd will next compete against host Bowling Green, Michigan State and Toledo on Jan. 16-17, 2015.



HAVE YOU HERD?



Marshall continued to build on its early success in the win against Ohio. Sophomore Danica Ross (Binghamton, N.Y.) won two events for the Herd, the 50 (23.80) and 100 (52.68) freestyle. The time in the 50 was the second fastest in Conference USA this season at the time of race completion. Ross also was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed first with a time of 1:36.83. That relay also included freshman Gloriya Mavrova (Alexandria, Va.), senior Lauren Hurd (Orange Village, Ohio) and freshman Lauren Cowher (Roanoke, Va.).



Freshman Emma Lockyer (Thunder Bay, Ontario) won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.35. Lockyer continued her success by swimming the seventh fastest 200 butterfly in school history (2:07.91) and also the eighth fastest 200 IM (2:08.47).



Senior Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va.) won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:10.71. Freshman Nele Albers (Ludinghausen, Germany) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.22, Albers also swam the fifth fastest 200 freestyle in school history (1:52.16) and the third fastest in Conference USA this season.



Mavrova tied the fourth fastest 50 freestyle time (24.22) in school history, and the fifth fastest 100 free (53.00) in Marshall history. Freshman Chloe Jones (Fishers, Ind.) posted the top score for divers, with a 224.55 in 3-meter and 222.45 in 1-meter.



For her performance against Ohio, Ross was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, Marshall's first nomination of the season.
