CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A season-low shooting performance of 29.9 percent from the field hindered Marshall women's basketball (9-5, 1-2) in a 74-56 loss to Charlotte (5-10, 1-2) on Saturday at Halton Arena.

Prior to the contest, Marshall led the league in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 56.2 points per game on 34.5 percent from the field. Charlotte poured in the most points allowed by the Herd this year (74) on a season-high clip of 48.3 percent.

Marshall came out of the gate on a 5-0 run, but made five turnovers on its next five possessions. Charlotte promptly answered with a 12-0 stint of its own over 2:27 to lead 12-5. At 10:50, the Herd made it back within one point, down 18-17, thanks to a 1-and-1 conversion by McKenzie Akers (Princeton, W.Va.).

However, at 8:23, a two-point Marshall deficit became a 14-point deficit, 34-20, thanks to a 12-0 Charlotte run over the next three minutes. The Herd ended the half on a positive note, on a 10-2 run and holding the 49ers scoreless for the final three minutes to trail by six at the break, 36-30.

After a slow start for each team coming out of halftime, the 49ers took off on an 8-0 run to lead 48-36 at 13:53. Marshall started the second period on 3-of-13 from the field and 0-of-3 from long range. The Herd's troubles were furthered after Charlotte gained a lead of 17, up 69-52, with 3:23 remaining after a 16-6 run over 4:38. The Herd could not overcome its deficit and fell into a largest margin of 18 with 26 seconds remaining. The game ended at 74-56 in the 49ers' favor.

AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) was the lone Herd scorer in double figures with 17 on 5-of-16 from the field and 1-of-5 from 3-point range. Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) had nine points, with Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) close to a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.

DANIEL DIALOGUE
Quotes from coach Matt Daniel:
On the Herd's first C-USA road trip:
"Overall, I think it was a successful road trip to steal the first one and if we learn from the second one. On to the next one."
