Head Coach Dan D'Antoni
Opening Statement
"We just came out in the first part of the game and didn't play basketball at the intensity and aggressive level we need to win a Division I game. It was almost to the point where we were trying to adjust how we normally guard, which is push them down the baseline, let the big get back and I was trying to get them to play straight up to cut back those big boys from stepping back, which they do a nice job of, stepping back and making shots. It's extremely important at this level, you've got to have people that can make shots. We were trying to adjust but couldn't. Maybe they were too young, but we couldn't adjust. We told them that you have play hard fellas and when they did, they didn't give them anything. We just didn't apply enough pressure at times."
On UTSA keeping ball from guard Austin Loop
"Loop is going to have to understand that everyone is scheming him now. So, he's going to have to take some tough shots, not just the open shots where he spots up and we get the ball to him. A lot of his shots now are going to have to be running off picks hard, with people running at him. I think he's capable. He's got a great stroke. As long as he's in rhythm he can hit those shots. We need to adjust a little bit and try to get him off picks, which we were doing in the second half to try and get him shots. He's going to have to be aggressive and play harder than he ever has because he's stepping up from a role player to a guy that gets these kind of shots."
Ryan Taylor, R-So., Forward
On shooting
"I think our energy got us good shots and we are starting making them. Everybody on the team had energy, so when they had an open shot they made it. Coach told us to never turn down a shot so I think the main thing was that we had a lot of energy going."
On defense
"They shot kind of lights-out the first half, especially number 12. I think in the second half, our energy picked our defense up. Then, our defense picked our offense up and we started getting shots. I think the main thing is that we had a lot of energy in the second half."
On teammate JP Kambola's play
"I think he gave us a spark even though you don't see it like on the scoring or rebound column, just his energy. His energy got the whole team going so it really helped us. We told him to be ready because his time was going to come and I think he made the best of it. His blocked shots got everybody going and got the crowd going. We feed off our crowd a lot.ââ'¬â€¹"
Justin Edmonds, R-Jr., Guard
On the way the team plays games this season
"I feel like we come out sluggish at the first start of the game. Toward the middle, we pick it up and play to our ability. We have to learn that ourselves and take care of that ourselves, where we come out sluggish. It is something that we don't want to do time after time. It gets a little frustrating, but at the end of the day, we have to take care of it."
