Tennis Suffers 4-0 Defeat to No. 1 UCLA

LOS ANGELES - No.1 UCLA (1-1) topped Marshall tennis 4-0 in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship qualifier event Saturday, Jan. 24 in Los Angeles.
The Herd faced nationally high-ranked competition in both singles and doubles action.
Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Maria Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) battled the No.1 team in the nation Catherine Harrison/Kyle McPhillips but came up short, falling 6-3.
Sophomore duo Derya Turhan ( Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya ( Sochi, Russia) took a tough 6-0 defeat at first doubles against the Bruins' Robin Anderson/Jennifer Brady.
Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) were left on court three unfinished at 4-3 (40-40).
In singles, Silver played her second match of her collegiate career at the second singles spot against Chanelle Van Nguyen, ranked No. 3 in the country, but was defeated 6-0, 6-0. Bogicevic also lost 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. The match concluded when Pomyatinskaya fell 6-0, 6-4 to No. 79 Kaitlin Ray.
Broomfield and Morales did not complete their matches. Turhan, who faced nationally ranked No. 2 Robin Anderson, was left on court one unfinished.
The Herd (1-1) will play a consolation match against No. 74 UC-Irvine (1-1) Sunday at 10 a.m. (PST). The Eaters were swept by No. 64 Kansas State earlier Saturday.
