HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - For the 10th time, Marshall radio play-by-play broadcaster Steve Cotton has been voted the West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year for 2014 by in-state members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Cotton, the "Voice of the Herd" on the Thundering Herd/IMG Sports Network, joined the Marshall broadcasting team in 1993. He has been the principal Marshall athletics play-by-play man since 1996.

Cotton, 50 and a Michigan native, is approaching his 800th Herd broadcast in football and men's basketball. He will call his 794th game when Charlotte visits the Henderson Center for a Conference USA game Saturday night. Cotton also calls a handful of Herd baseball games each season.

"Once again, the members of the NSSA have recognized what we've known for a long time - Steve is an outstanding broadcaster," said Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick. "His game calls keep Herd fans not only informed on what's happening on the field or the floor, but his broadcasts are filled with plenty of facts and history on Herd sports and our teams."

Cotton won his first NSSA state sportscasting honor in 1998. He has since won in 2001, 2003-06, 2008-10 and now in 2014. He will receive his latest award at the annual NSSA Awards Banquet on June 8 in Salisbury, N.C.

Cotton is a 1987 journalism/communications graduate of the University of Florida. He earned his master's degree in journalism at Marshall in 1995.

Charleston Daily Mail sports editor Chuck McGill won the NSSA's state Sportswriter of the Year honor for the third time in four years.
