HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Sophomore forward Terrence Thompson (Durham, N.C.) had 17 rebounds and eight points for Marshall men's basketball in a 101-89 exhibition loss to Newberry College on Sunday at Cam Henderson Center.
Junior forward Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the team in scoring with 14 points and junior guard Austin Loop (South Webster, Ohio) followed with 13. Thompson, Taylor and Loop started the contest alongside sophomore guard Brett Bowling (Pineville, W.Va.) and freshman point guard Noah Frampton (Poca, W.Va.).
Marshall strived for the same fast-paced tempo and energy it achieved in its first exhibition game, a 112-78 defeat of Bluefield State on Nov. 12, but struggled to find it and keep up as Newberry College came out with the same strong pace. Loop led the way with seven points in the first half, but the Herd faced a 13-point deficit at the break, down 55-42.
In spite of a 20-point hole with 15:39 remaining in the game, Marshall clawed its way back to a five-point deficit with 2:18 on the clock, down 90-85. However, a 6-1 run by Newberry put the Wolves back in a double-digit lead, up 96-86, with just over a minute left. Although it outscored Newberry in the second half, 47-46, the Herd could not surmount the Wolves' attack and fell, 101-89.
The Herd shot 41.8 percent from the field, 52 percent from the line and 25.6 percent from long range. Newberry had 60 points come off its bench, and had 26 points off Marshall's 20 turnovers. Marshall put up 44 points in the paint and posted 24 points off the Wolves' 24 turnovers.
Frampton and senior guard Justin Edmonds (Albion, Mich.) had nine points apiece, and freshman Ajdin Penava (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina) added eight points.
