Game Notes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
The Marshall women's basketball begins a three-game home welcoming the Saint Francis Red Flash to the Cam Henderson Center Thursday, Dec. 17. Tipoff is set for noon.

The Herd (6-1) are coming off of a close loss to WVU in the annual Capital Classic, 66-60. Saint Francis (2-6) is fresh off an 82-78 win over Pitt-Johnstown. These two teams have not met since Dec. 20, 1993.

There will be free admission for faculty and staff with a valid Marshall ID. There will also be a "Meal Deal". For $5 you can purchase your ticket and get a voucher for a small drink, popcorn and a hot dog at the concession stand. Come spend lunch with the Herd.

The game is part of Herd basketball double header as the women tip at noon and then the men are in Charleston for its Capital Classic matchup with WVU at 7 p.m.

The remaining non-conference home games for Marshall will be Dec. 20 against Norfolk State and Dec. 22 against WVU Tech.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

The Herd has a few players who are approaching career milestones and rising up the ranks of the program record book.

Senior Leah Scott has scored 126 points this season for a career total of 959. She is 41 points shy of becoming the 19th player in team history to score 1,000. She also ranks 11th all-time with 233 free-throws made and needs 7 more to be in the top 10.

Senior Norrisha Victrum can be found in a few places in the record book. Victrum has 297 assists and needs 3 to pass Kristi Huff (1988-92) for 6th all-time. Victrum also currently ranks 9th in 3-point field goals made (94) and 9th in 3-point field goals attempted (299). Victrum needs 243 points to become the 20th player to reach 1,000 for her career.

Junior Chelsey Romero has 14 blocks this season to give her a career total of 98. Romero is in 5th place all-time and needs 2 more blocks to become the 5th player in program history with 100 in a career.

SCOUTING THE RED FLASH

Saint Francis enters the game 2-6 this season. Last time out, the Red Flash defeated Pitt-Johnstown 82-78. SFU is led in scoring by freshman guard Jess Kovatch who is averaging 23.0 ppg in 29.3 minutes per game. She has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week four consecutive times. Kovatch has four 30-point performances this season and leads the NEC and all NCAA freshmen in scoring. She leads both the NEC and the NCAA in made 3-pointers this season as well with 32. Redshirt junior Katie Reese leads the Red Flash with 5.0 apg and 6-foot-2 graduate-transfer forward Brielle Ward is pulling down 7.9 boards per game.

The last time these two teams met was Dec. 20, 1993. There are only six players combined between both teams who were even born. Saint Francis graduate-transfer Brielle Ward (1993),seniors Brooklyn Taylor (1993) and Aisha Brock (1993) and from Marshall redshirt junior Talequia Hamilton (1992), redshirt senior Leah Scott (1993) and senior Norrisha Victrum (1993) were all born just before the last matchup.

Marshall is on a 10-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The last loss was Dec. 29, 2013 against Navy, 72-68. Wins are:

The Herd has put up 20 or more points in a quarter 11 times out of 28 total played. Defensively, the Herd has allowed 20 or more points in a quarter five times with four against Morehead State and held opponents to single digits six times.
