Dec. 18, 2015 HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Former Marshall University student-athletes Sammie Bane of volleyball, Alanna Dawkins of track and field and Cece Scott of soccer have received the Academic Excellence Award announced earlier this week by the D1A Faculty Athletic Representatives.
The Academic Excellence Award is awarded to all student-athletes who received a Bachelor's degree through the academic year of 2014-15 with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher upon graduation. The recipient must have participated in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at an FBS institution in a sport sponsored by an FBS conference.
"The honor by the D1A faculty reps is really appreciated by Marshall University and is well-deserved by our three former student-athletes," Herd Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick said. "The honor not only is a reflection on them and their great efforts as students as well as athletes, but also displays the commitment we have here at Marshall to academics, whether it is displayed in GPAs, retention or graduation rates."
Throughout their four-year careers at Marshall, all three earned Conference USA Academic medals and were members of the C-USA Honor Roll all four years.
Bane, who also was a standout on the court, placed herself in the Marshall record book as she left the program fourth in assists (4,892), eighth in service aces (98) and ninth in digs (1,137). The Brownstown, Ind., native was three-time member of the C-USA All-Academic team.
As a senior, Dawkins of Columbus,Ohio, came in first place for Marshall during the 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 48.00 at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational. At the same meet, Dawkins took third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.50.
Scott of Radford, Va., started in two games her senior year against VCU and Purdue, while playing in 12 matches over her Herd career.
