Tennis Trumps Penn State, Remains Undefeated at Home

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- No. 55 Marshall tennis (7-3) prevailed over Penn State (2-7) 4-3 Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.
The Herd has not been defeated at home this season, and has now defeated the Nittany Lions in back-to-back seasons.
Zealous doubles action started the day before a nail-biting finish from sixth singles sealed the deal for Marshall.
On court 2, lone senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogecevic (Belgrade, Serbia) lost a close 8-6 match.
Sophomore duo Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) knocked off No. 51 nationally ranked doubles pair Victoria Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogova 8-4, leaving the doubles point in the hands of court 3.
Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) proved victorious, snatching an 8-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
Four and a half hours of neck-and-neck singles actions proved fate of the rest of the match. Broomfield was unlucky, with a 6-4, 6-0 loss on court 5, but Pomaytinskaya won her eighth singles match of the season with a straight set win on court 3 (7-5, 6-4).
Turhan took care of business on court 1 with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win, but Bogecevic dropped a tough three set battle (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) on court 4.
Silver also battled at the number 2 spot, but ultimately fell 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
With the match sitting on the shoulder of Morales at the No. 6 spot after dropping the first set, she triumphed with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to secure the match for the Herd.
Up next, Marshall will take on No. 73 Utah (1-6) Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at home. Utah will first take on Penn State Sunday, March 1, at 11 a.m.
