Final Stats

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall tennis (3-2) regained a winning record after a 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky University (1-4) Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.

It was the Herd's second win of the day after sweeping Morehead State 7-0 earlier Saturday.

In doubles, sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) teamed up with freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) for the fifth time this spring for a quick 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.

Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) took care of business on court 3, clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win.

Sophomore duo Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) were left on the court with the match unfinished at 5-4, 40-15 (double match point).

Singles play remained a strong force throughout the day. Bogicevic shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 on court 5 and Pomyatinskaya followed soon after on court 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

The match was decided when Silver captured a 6-4, 6-0 win at second singles

Nationally ranked No. 116 Turhan played a grueling battle on court 1, falling just short in the third set tiebreaker (5-7, 6-2, 11-9).

The Herd packed up after a long day when Morales finished her match on court 6 with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

UP NEXT

The Herd will stay home next weekend, welcoming No. 64 Louisville on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m., and No. 72 Minnesota on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m.

Last season, the Herd was able to pick up a 5-2 win on Minnesota's home turf, but fell to Louisville in a close 4-3 contest.

QUOTES BY COACH John Mercer

"We played a lot better than we did early today, which is good. Our decision making and shot making was good, and our conditioning really showed through during the later hours of the day."

"I'm happy with the way we are using our heads when we are out on the court. We showed improvement, and that's what we have to keep doing. Even the small improvements are important."

"We have a big weekend coming up against two ranked opponents. We'll be ready for them."
