HOUSTON -- No. 62 Marshall tennis (11-6) suffered a5-2loss to former Conference USA rival No. 48 Houston (15-4) Sunday, March 22 at the John E. Hoff Courts in Houston. The Cougars took their 11th straight match, second-best in program history.
A fight right from the start for the doubles point was nothing new to the Herd
Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) lost a tough 6-3 match on court 2. Sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) answered with a 6-4 win on court 3.
In the deciding doubles match on court 1, sophomore duo Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) lost a grueling 7-5 match, giving the Cougars the early advantage to start singles play.
Turhan faced nationally ranked singles player No. 33 Despoina Vogasari and lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). Bogicevic was also unlucky, losing her match 6-3, 6-1 on court 6.
Houston then secured the match with a win over Morales on court 5 (6-4, 6-0).
Pomyatinskaya was the first Herd win for the day, beating No. 107 Elena Kordolaimi in three sets (4-6, 6-2,10-8). The win puts the sophomore on a four match win streak, and she's won eight of her last 10.
Broomfield fell in a tough three-set battle but Silver triumphed in a three-set grueler of her own (1-6, 6-1, 11-9) for the second MU point.
Marshall continues its road play, heading to the Sunshine State to take on current C-USA foes FIU and Florida Atlantic on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, respectively.
Quotes by head coach John Mercer
"We were right there in the doubles. Just a few points here and there made the difference."
"That was a great win by Anna in singles, especially after losing that first set. Kai and Maddie did a great job too battling back after tough first sets.
"The match easily could've gone the other way. We need to keep working on getting everyone on track and playing well at the same time without being so sporadical."
