BOCA RATON, Fla.-- After a tough 4-3 defeat to FIU on Saturday, No. 74 Marshall tennis bounced back with a 4-3 win over FAU Sunday, March 29 at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton, Fla.
Although the Herd played without No. 1 singles and doubles player Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany), the Herd was able to break the Owl's six-match winning streak.
FAU was able to take an early lead after securing the doubles point with wins at 1 and 3. Senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) and freshman Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) stepped up to fill in the No. 1 spot, but ultimately lost 6-2. Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) teamed up with  high school academy pal Anne Gulsrud (Stavenger, Norway) at the No. 3 spot, but they too were unlucky with a tough 6-4 loss.Â
Sophomore Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) captured a win (6-2) at the No. 2 spot.
With the Owls up 1-0 heading into singles action, the Herd came out swinging.
Broomfield captured a swift 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot, followed by a straight set win by Morales (6-1, 6-0) on court 5 to put the Herd up 2-1. Â
Pomyatinskaya filled in for Turhan at the No. 1 spot, dominating with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The win marks the sophomore's first collegiate win at first singles.
The match was secured when Silver clinched a 6-1, 7-6 (10-3) win on court 2.
FAU was able to improve the score to 4-3 with wins over Gulsrud on court 6 (6-2, 6-3) and Bogicevic on court 5 (7-6, 6-4).
The Herd will play at home only two more times this season. The team will take on DePaul Friday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m., and William and Mary Sunday, April 5 at noon. Both matches will be played outdoors at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on campus, weather permitting.
Quotes by head coach John Mercer
"After a tough loss yesterday, it was really encouraging to see the girls bounce back and come out with positive and competitive attitudes.  Today we were faced with a challenge, and we went about it in the right way and got the job done."
"The girls were fired up and played fairly well throughout the match. The matches we won we dominated. Hopefully we can take our competitive sprit with us and continue to move in the right direction."
