HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Marshall men's soccer team dropped its final game of the Veterans Memorial Cup presented by Qdoba Sunday at Hoops Family Field with a 1-0 loss to Evansville.
The Herd falls to 4-2-0 this season, while Evansville improves to 2-3-0. In the first game of the day, Robert Morris defeated No. 24 Bowling Green 1-0.
All four teams won a game in the tournament, but Marshall and Bowling Green were named co-champions because of an equal finish in goal differential.
AGAINST THE ACES
The teams came into the second half scoreless, with Evansville outshooting the Herd 13-5 (6-1 shots on goal).
In the second half, the Aces scored off of a corner kick. Nate Opperman was able to connect on a header after the ball was whipped in by Zac Blaydes to make the score 1-0.
From there, Marshall fought to get back into the match, but was not able to tie the score up, dropping the game and ending its four game winning streak.
THE GRAY AREA
On the Evansville match:
"It's a tough loss, but I mean it was almost a payback from last year because we beat them 1-0 in their tournament last year. Credit to Evansville, though. They had a good game plan and we were flat from the start and maybe didn't give them enough respect. As I told them, every college game has the potential to be a one goal game and that was true today."
"We will regroup and get ready to host Kentucky next Saturday. It's always an exciting rivalry game and it's the start of Conference USA play, so it's very important that we step out there and perform well."
