HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team dropped a tight Conference USA opener at home to Kentucky Saturday, losing 1-0 from a Napo Matsoso goal.
The Herd falls to 4-3-0 (0-1-0 C-USA), while Kentucky moves to 3-2-1 (1-0-0 C-USA).
AGAINST THE WILDCATS
The first half came to a close with neither side creating a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Kentucky led with six shots to Marshall's three.
In the second half, Marshall had its chances, including a two shots on goal by junior Rimario Gordon (Kingston, Jamaica) and one apiece by Ryan Forde and Rudy Erwin.
Kentucky's goal came in the 79th minute when Kentucky's Napo Matsoso collected a pass from Xahne Reid and curled it past Marshall goalkeeper Bijan Gloston (Clarksville, Tenn.) from 18 yards for the winner.
THE GRAY AREA
Coach Bob Gray on the match:
"It was a typical conference game and it was like a good 12-round boxing match out there. I thought we had the better looks to be honest. We had some good chances that we could not put away."
"This was the best game Daniel Jodah has had this season, Ryan Forde was good as well and so were a few guys off the bench. This is a game that we can build on."
