@Herd_Tennis Finishes Day One At UVa Fall Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall tennis wrapped up day one at the UVa Fall Invite on Friday, Sept. 25, as the Herd walked away with a total of three match wins, one from doubles and two from singles.
Competing for the Herd on Friday was Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), Jackie Carr (Rogers, Ark.), Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway), Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany).
"We had some very good matches today. I think we are definitely making progress. Hopefully we'll get some good weather tomorrow," said Herd coach John Mercer.
Weather would play a factor in the matches on Friday, as it forced some matches indoors to the Boar's Head Sports Club.
In doubles action, Marshall got off on the right foot with the duo of Morales and Carr claiming an 8-5 victory over Arkansas' Oparenovic and Jurasic. Suffering setbacks were the teams of Turhan/Pomyatinskaya and Bogicevic/Gulsrud, who both lost by a score of 8-5.
In the 'Blue Flight Singles' matches, Carr and Turhan shined in their first matches of the day. Carr, who was paired up against Rajkovic of Old Dominion, won her first set 6-3. After dropping the second one 6-2, she bounced back to take the match in the tie-breaking set, 6-4. Turhan was matched up against Hannah Shteyn from Maryland. Turhan controlled the tempo of the match, by winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Turhan and Carr moved on in the bracket to both face an UVa opponent. Both, Turhan and Carr fell in those matches, but Turhan lost in three sets, while Carr fell in straight sets.
Pomyatinskaya, Morales, Bogicevic, Gulsrud all lost in their first singles match of the invite.
