PITTSBURGH - Marshall women's tennis opened its spring season with a setback at the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational against the host Pittsburgh Panthers on Friday.
Junior Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and sophomore Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) picked up the only win for the Herd. The duo was paired up against Audrey Ann Blakely and Gabriela Rezende on the second court. In a tightly contested match, Pomyatinskaya and Silver came out on top, 6-4.
Juniors Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) battled on the first court, but fell to Amber Washington and Lolade Ogungbesan, 6-4. Also suffering a loss was the duo of junior Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) and sophomore Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), who were defeated, 6-1.
In singles play, Marshall was unable to get anything going as it was held winless through five singles matches. The closest match came on the second court, which featured Morales against Blakely. Morales rolled in the first set, 6-2, but faltered in the second set, 6-2. In the tie breaking round, Blakely edged out Morales, 7-6.
"I thought that we actually competed well," Herd coach John Mercer said. "We just need to continue workin on somethings that should make us a better team as the season goes along."
