PITTSBURGH - Marshall women's tennis shined on Saturday at the Nishian Vartabedian Spring Invite, as it claimed six victories out of eight matches against the Akron Zips.
"I thought we did a good job bouncing back from yesterday," Herd coach John Mercer said. "It was good again to play a lot of competitive sets. We're looking forward to having one more strong day tomorrow."
The day began with doubles play, as the Herd earned wins in the first and second flight, while falling on the third. On the first court was Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), who defeated the duo of Sophia Geier and Karolina Maksimova, 6-1. Following suit was Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia), who earned a 6-3 victory over Shannon Newnes and Carlin Knezevich. Suffering a defeat for the Herd was the tandem of Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway).
Similar to doubles, Marshall rolled in singles play with four wins out of five matches played, including three straight set victories. Turhan, Silver and Gulsrud all earned straight set wins, which featured a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win by Silver. On the second court, Morales was required to come from behind for the win, as she dropped the first set, 1-6, but bounced back to take the second set, 6-4 and swept her opponent in the tie breaking round, 6-0. Bogicevic won her first set, 6-3, but was unable to maintain the lead and dropped the second and tie breaking set, 7-5, 6-0.
With the win on Saturday, sophomore Silver earned her first win of the season. She was held winless through her first four matches.
