@Herd_Tennis Completes Day Three at Nishan Vartabedian

PITTSBURGH - Marshall women's tennis completed the final day of competition at the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invite on Sunday against the Miami of Ohio RedHawks.
The Herd earned two singles wins and one doubles win.
"I'm really proud of how Derya, Rachael and Maddie came out and competed," Herd coach John Mercer said. "They played really hard all three days and their hard work over break obviously showed. Also, I thought Anne did a great job playing doubles with Derya today. It is the first time they have played together and to get a win against a good Miami (Ohio) team was exciting."
Marshall was led by junior Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany), as she picked up a singles win against Anzhelika Shapovalov in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In doubles play, Turhan paired up with her fellow classmate Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) for a 6-4 victory in the second flight against Andreea Badileanu and Ana Rajkovic. The tandem of Turhan and Gulsrud was the first time they were paired up this season.
Also seeing success on the day was Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), who held off a surging Badileanu. Morales took the first set, 6-1, but went on to drop the second set, 2-6. In the tie breaking set, Morales battled to take a 7-6 win.
Despite the Herd dropping the first flight in doubles and the third flight in singles, Marshall competed strongly in both matches. The duo of Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Morales fell in their doubles match, 7-6, while Silver attempted a come from behind win in singles, but came up short to fall, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Gulsrud and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) each fell in their respective singles match in straight sets.
