Marshall Tennis Blanked By South Carolina

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- 56th-ranked Marshall tennis dropped its second match of the season to 28th-ranked South Carolina at the Boar's Head Sports Club on Sunday morning, 4-0.
With the loss Marshall moves to 1-2 on the season, while the Gamecocks improve to 5-0.
"I thought our doubles play picked up really nice as the match went along," Herd coach John Mercer said. "But we have to give South Carolina credit, they are very well coached and play hard.
Despite the score, the Herd was competitive on the day with the doubles being close. The Gamecocks took an early advantage in the third doubles match as Cochran and Rohrabacher defeated Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway), 6-3. Following that match, Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia), fell in a tough match, 6-4. Resulting in an unfinished match was Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), who trailed 5-4.
In singles, Marshall was led by No. 99 Turhan, who competed in the No. 1 flight against No. 43 Paige Cline. Turhan's match resulted unfinished, but was leading the first set, 6-2 and was tied in the second set, 3-3. Morales and Bogicevic's matches also resulted in unfinished. Suffering setbacks was Silver, Pomyatinskaya and Gulsrud. Silver fell (6-3, 6-1) to No. 54 Ingrid Gamarra Martins in the No. 3 spot, Pomyatinskaya lost (6-3, 6-1) to Ximena Siles Luna in the No. 5 spot and Gulsrud dropped her match (6-1, 6-1) to Rohrabacher in the No. 6 match.
