ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Marshall men's soccer team fought to a 2-2 draw with New Mexico Saturday afternoon. Senior Rudy Erwin scored the equalizer in the 85th minute.
The first half was a scoreless, back and forth contest as neither team was able to get into an offensive rhythm. Marshall had three shots and New Mexico with seven. The Lobos had the only shots on goal in the first half with two, and freshman goalkeeper Trevor Clemens made both saves. The defense for the Herd was active all over the field to help break up many attempts for New Mexico.
In the second half New Mexico went on the attack as Matt Dorsey scored the first goal of the day in the 53rd minute. Marshall then went on the offensive and found an opportunity as sophomore Jacob Purpero knocked in a shot that went just over the keeper, to even the match at 1-1 in the 61st minute. 10 minutes and nine seconds later, New Mexico took the lead back as Chris Wehan scored his fourth goal of the season.
Marshall fought back as Erwin hit a shot from the top of the box with five minutes and 17 seconds left in regulation for his first goal in his Herd career. The Marshall defense fought hard in both overtimes as New Mexico attempted seven total shots with two on goal and Clemens made both saves, including one with just under 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
COACH'S CORNER
Assistant Coach Thomas Olivier:
"Well it was a gritty, difficult game today for us. We certainly faced our share of challenges throughout the match, but we came out with a point on the road so we'll take it."
"I was real proud of the resilience and the perseverance we showed in twice coming back down a goal. We didn't quit and kept battling."
"We got some good minutes from our bench and managed the game well so we take those positives into our next big game on Wednesday at home."
