HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is 4-1 after its journey south to Edinburg, Texas, for the Feast on the Border Classic hosted by the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley. The Herd defeated Sam Houston State, 73-50, and then suffered its first loss of the season to Prairie View A&M, 78-68. Marshall became the first team this season to outrebound Sam Houston State. The Bearkats had been cleaning the glass at an average of 9.6 more boards per game. The Herd won the rebounding battle by five, 44-39.
Sophomore forward Khadaijia Brooks was one of five Herd players with five or more (6 rebs.), but was also tasked with guarding Sam Houston State's top rebounder in Jasmine McCants. McCants was averaging 7.3 rebounds per game going into the contest and grabbed just three. In the loss to Prairie View A&M, Brooks established a career-best 11 rebounds.
Senior Kiana Evans scored 30 points during the tournament, including 22 against Prairie View A&M and was named to the all-tournament team.
CAREER-HIGH AFTER CAREER-HIGH
Senior Kiana Evans set a career-high with 19 points on Nov. 15 at home against Florida A&M. She scored 11 points in a Herd dominated fourth quarter to pull away from the Rattlers in the win. Four days later, she poured in 23 points against Coastal Carolina. Evans started the game on fire with 15 points in the first quarter including nine-straight late in the first to give the Herd the lead.
BLOCK PARTY
The Herd is averaging 6.2 blocks per game this season. Marshall recorded 10 blocks in the season debut at Illinois, added eight more against Florida A&M and then six versus Coastal Carolina. The Illinois contest was the first time that the Herd had double-digit blocks in a game since March 5, 2014 against UTSA in an 81-76 overtime win when Marshall registered 11 swats. Against the Fighting Illini, redshirt-senior Talequia Hamilton led Marshall with a career-high five rejections. Freshman Ashley Saintigene had three blocks in her Herd debut (all coming in the second quarter). Sophomore Shayna Gore and freshman Asheika Alexander chipped in with one block each. Against the Rattlers in the home-opener, sophomore Khadaijia Brooks led with three while Hamilton and Saintigene added two each and senior Kiana Evans rounded out the night with one. Saintigene contributed five of the Herd's six blocks against Coastal Carolina. The freshman leads the team with 13 and has recorded at least one block in each game.
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE
The Bears are 1-4 this season under interim head coach Edward Davis Jr. Morgan State's lone victory this season was a 79-28 thrashing of Washington Adventist. Losses have been to Mount St. Mary's (65-50), Saint Louis (71-43), Eastern Kentucky (66-58) and UMKC (64-56). The Bears are led by junior guard Braennan Farrar who is averaging 15.4 points per game and 3.8 assists. Junior forward Tykyrah Williams is the only other player in double-figures with 10.2 points per game. Junior guard Zuri White leads with 7.3 rebounds per game, she did not play in the most recent game against UMKC. Morgan State has averaged nearly 40 rebounds per game but were held to a season-low 19 against UMKC.
The last time these two teams met was the season-opener on Nov. 21, 2003. Marshall won at home 88-34.
