@Herd_Tennis Drops C-USA Opener to Rice

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's tennis team dropped its Conference USA opener 4-3 to the 29th-ranked Rice Owls Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
Earning a doubles win for the Herd was the team of Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales. Turhan, Morales and Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) won singles matches for Marshall.
The Herd dropped to 4-5 overall, 0-1 C-USA with the loss. Rice improved to 5-2, 1-0 C-USA with the win.
Rice started doubles action hot as the Owls would earn the doubles point. Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) dropped a 6-2 decision to Astete and Durkin. Turhan and Morales responded with a 6-3 win over Hodge and Ho. Silver and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) forced a tiebreak before falling 7-6(4) to Ip and Zinko, which gave Rice the doubles point.
The Herd fared better in singles action, winning three of the six singles matches. Turhan beat 84th-ranked Lindsey Hodge in three sets for her second consecutive win over a ranked opponent. Silver also won for the second consecutive match, defeating Astete in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Morales won in three sets over Alison Ho. Pomyatinskaya dropped a tough 6-2, 6-4 decision to 34th-ranked Katherine Ip. Bogicevic fell by the same 6-2, 6-4 margin to Durkin and Gulsrud dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Zinko.
