ATLANTA ââ'¬" The Marshall swimming and diving team earned its highest ever finish at the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships, earning a third place finish Saturday at McAuley Aquatics Center.
The Herd earned 12 medals total at the meet, including two gold and five silver and bronze apiece.
In the 200 butterfly, the Herd placed second, third and fourth. Junior Chloe Parsemain placed second (2:01.27) and freshmen Shir Wasserman (2:01.63) and Caroline Wanner (2:01.78) placed third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Madeline Schaffer placed eighth (2:03.67), while freshman Brittany Wilkerson placed 17th (2:07.79).
Freshman Anna Lynch (16:37.21) and sophomore Madi Pulfer (16:40.10) placed second and third in the 1,650 freestyle. Sophomores Savannah Ruedt (seventh, 16:58.46) and Nele Albers (10, 17:11.35) also cracked the top ten. Juniors Teel Hartmann (17:15.30) and Laura Bradley (17:19.21) finished 12th and 13th.
Junior Megan Wolons earned the silver in platform diving, with a score of 242.35. Junior Kelly Toner placed 9th. In the "B" final, juniors Kelly Toner (173.45) placed ninth, Heather Lonkert (151.35) placed 12th and Rachel Sleichter (143.40) placed 14th.
In a tie for bronze, sophomore Gloriya Mavrova placed third in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 50.32, tying with Agi Bucz of Rice. In the "B" final, sophomore Lauren Cowher (51.26) and freshman Maggie Stovall (51.39) placed 10th and 11th.
The team of sophomore Lauren Cowher, Mavrova, Stovall and Parsemain placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:25. 47.
Schaffer also placed 13th in the 200 backstroke, the lone Herd performer in the event. In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Emma Lockyer (2:22.33) and junior Mikaya Reynolds (2:22.80) placed 14th and 15th.
"This was a great accomplishment for our team," Marshall coach Bill Tramel said. "To be only 17.5 points behind Rice considering we were last place in this league two years ago, it's incredible. Especially when you take into account our divers are working without a tower facility.
"Tonight we won six medals. We went 2-3 on two events tonight.
"I think we had two medals total last year. This year we had 12 or 13, I haven't had time to count.
"We are conditioned to be best at the end and tonight, at the end of the meet, we had our best session of the week. The stats are really amazing. 12 school records. That's over half of all the events. I'll have to tally the personal Lifetime Bests but it's got to be close to 60 or more.
"The whole staff is proud of these young women. We've come a long way, but we aren't satisfied. Our goal is to win the whole league. From day one, that's what we've strived for. We have lots more work to do, but right now we are going to have some BBQ and celebrate with the families of our team."
