HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University swimming and diving team wrapped up day one of the Marshall Invitational at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium Friday.

Marshall scored three individual wins Friday. Sophomore Gloriya Mavrova (Alexandria, Va.) broke the pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.37. The time surpasses the 23.58 mark that Kayla Andrews of West Virginia University set in 2008.

Sophomore Madi Pulfer (Ottowa, Ontario) won the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:10.32. Junior Teel Hartmann (Louisville, Ky.) finished second (17:20.34).

In diving, junior Megan Wolons (Williamsburg, Va.) won the 3-meter with a score of 303.97. Junior Kelly Toner (Fort Washington, Pa.) finished runner-up with a score of 291.37. The score qualified Toner for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. She joins Wolons and junior Heather Lonkert (Moon Township, Pa.) as Herd divers to qualify for NCAA competition this season.

Sophomore Rachel DePietro (Lancaster, Pa.) swam a lifetime best Friday, in the 100 backstroke (3rd, 57.33).

Ohio holds a slim lead after day one, with 157 points. Marshall is in second with 151 points, while Toledo is third with 103.

"We had a very good night," Marshall coach Bill Tramel said. "Lots of great swims. I think the atmosphere our team created was exceptional. The energy and cheering really helped.

"Gloriya (Mavrova) broke the pool record tonight. We are really happy with that because the old record was held by a WVU swimmer. Kelly Toner qualified for NCAA Zone Championships on 1-Meter Diving. We also had Rachael DePietro swimming 2 Lifetime Bests. We had many season bests behind that.

"This meet is our final tune-up for C-USA Championships, so we are looking for perfect races. We did well tonight, but it's easier to get up for evening events. We need to keep the momentum going for tomorrow morning. But we do feel pretty good about tonight."
