@Herd_Tennis Drops Conference Match to FIU, 4-3

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to the 48th-ranked FIU Panthers on Friday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
With the loss, the Herd dropped to 4-7 overall, 0-2 in Conference USA. The Panthers improved to 8-1 overall, 1-0 in Conference USA with the win.
Picking up wins in doubles play for the Herd were the team of Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) and the team of Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway).
FIU started doubles play with a win at the No. 2 spot but the Herd closed out the doubles portion with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to take the doubles point. Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) dropped a 6-3 decision to Orlando and Lazaro. Silver and Gulsrud picked up a 6-4 win over Caluk and Brozovich. Turhan and Morales were
forced to a tiebreak before winning 7-6(4) to clinch the doubles point for the Herd.
The Herd struggled in singles play, winning only two of the six singles matches. Silver started singles action by dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Lazaro. Bogicevic followed suit by dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Caluk. Turhan won the first set of her match 6-0 before battling through a second-set tiebreak to defeat Veksler 7-6(5) in the set to win the match in straight sets. Pomyatinskaya dropped the first set of her match 6-4 before battling back to take the second set 6-2 to force a third set. She fell 6-1 in the third set to Orlando. Gulsrud dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Brozovich that clinched the match for FIU. Morales closed out the action with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Nagode.

The Herd hosts VCU on Sunday at 11 a.m. as part of a three match homestand. The match will take place at the Huntington Tennis Club.
