MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Fifth-seeded Marshall women's tennis (11-11) ended its season Friday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to the fourth-seeded and nationally ranked No. 75 Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (14-7) at the Adams Tennis Complex.
"It just came down to a couple big points early in the match and they played them a little better than us today," Herd coach John Mercer said. "Once we got behind we just couldn't dig our way out and Old Dominion did an excellent job maintaining its level of play. They just flat out played a little better than we did. We wish them the best of luck."
The Thundering Herd was unable to capture the doubles point for the first time in the last five matches. Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) began the match by dropping a 6-2 decision to Borislava Botusharova and Marijana Novakovic. Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) and Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) improved to 10-0 when paired together in doubles play this season with a 6-2 win over Nikol Hristova and Nataliya Vlasova. Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) fell in their match against Ingrid Vojcinakova and Adriana Rajkovic, 7-6, clinching the doubles point for the Lady Monarchs.
The Herd was unable secure a point in any of the singles matches. Gulsrud opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 loss against Natalya Malenko. Silver followed suit by dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Vlasova. Bogicevic fell 6-3, 6-3 against Vojcinakova to clinch the match for Old Dominion. The remaining three matches went unfinished, with Turhan and Morales in the third set of their matches and Pomyatinskaya in the second set of her match.
