HAVE YOU HERD
Marshall suffered its first home loss of the season when it fell to the UTEP Miners, 91-68. Austin Loop broke the school's all-time three-pointer record to pass Tamar Slay (1998-02) on the list. Terrence Thompson had his second career double-double. It came from a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jon Elmore reached double figure points for the 22nd consecutive game this season. Elmore also had his fourth straight game of dishing out at least five assists. It was the second time this season where the Herd did not score at least 70 points in a game. It was also the first time the team did not surpass 70 points at home this season. Marshall's three made 3-pointers were a season low. Stevie Browning scored a season-low three points.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The Golden Eagles through the first two-thirds of the season have produced 34.3 rebounds per game, the most by any team in the Doc Sadler era and a continuation of the yearly improvement (29.8 and 31.7 the first two years). Its 26.9 defensive rebounds per game in league play is good for No. 4 in the conference.
Doc Sadler is in his third year at the helm of Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles were predicted to finish 13th overall in the league in a poll conducted by C-USA coaches during the preseason.
WHO TO KNOW
Quinton Campbell leads Southern Miss in scoring with 12.0 points per game. He is also No. 2 on the team in rebounds with 5.8 boards per game. His points are No. 25 in C-USA, while his rebounds are No. 17 in the league. Campbell is averaging 7.7 rebounds in league play, which is good for sixth in the conference.
Cortez Edwards runs the point for the Golden Eagles and averages 2.8 assists per game. Edwards is also skilled at creating turnovers, as his 1.3 steals lead the team and are No. 8 in the league. He is No. 3 in league play for steals, having averaged 1.8 per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Marshall will meet Southern Miss for the 20th contest between the two sides. It is a series that dates back all the way from the 1950-51 season. After meeting in 1953, the two sides did not face each other until the 1988-89 season. Marshall and Southern Miss would meet a year after, but did not face each other again until Marshall joined C-USA in the 2005-06 season.
LAST TIME
Marshall, trailing by as much as 23 points with 11 minutes into the game, came off the hardwood and scored two baskets with less than one second on the clock -- to end regulation and overtime -- and escaped with a 108-106 victory over the Golden Eagles on Austin Loop's left-wing jumper that just beat the horn.
Marshall (16-15, 12-6) won despite 40 points by Southern Miss guard Kourtlin Jackson -- the first 40-point performance against the Herd since Eastern Michigan's Derrick Dial went for 45 in a home win over the Herd on Jan. 5, 1998. Jackson's scoring is the C-USA game high this season.
Golden Eagles Coach Doc Sadler was ejected with 4:55 remaining in regulation following his second technical foul.
