INDIANAPOLIS -- Marshall freshman Sirena Rowe finished 35th in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA Championships Thursday at the IU Natatorium.
Rowe finished at 22.43, good for sixth in her heat. She competed against 53 student-athletes.
"This was a very solid swim," head coach Bill Tramel said. "For her first experience at this level, she carried herself like a pro. We thought her first 25 yards were great. She popped up a little too early off the wall so she could have been a little faster but it's still faster than she was at finals a month ago during the C-USA Championships. The important thing is that she is swimming fast against the best in the world. We all think she can get a lifetime best time tomorrow in the 100 backstroke, so we are shifting our focus to the next event."
The Charlotte, N.C., native became only the second Marshall swimmer ever to compete at the NCAA Championships. She is the first since Milla Kuurto in 2005.
Rowe will compete in two more events during the championships. She will swim the 100 backstroke Friday at approximately 11:45 a.m. ET. She will finish the championships Sunday with the 100 freestyle. The championship is streamed for free through the NCAA.
