Victory guarantees Herd spot in Conference USA Tournament

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Marshall men's soccer team sealed a spot in the Conference USA Tournament with a 2-1 double-overtime victory at South Carolina, Tuesday night. Sophomore Jamil Roberts scored the game-winner in the 107th minute, and assisted on the Herd's first goal.
The Thundering Herd improves to 6-8-3 and 2-3-2 in conference play. South Carolina is now 6-10 overall and 1-6 in conference action.
Marshall can finish anywhere from the fifth seed to the seventh seed for the tournament that begins on Nov. 7 at Charlotte.
"It was a tough match tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Both teams fought for their lives. It was good to see us edge it in that category. We had a lot of guys playing banged up, so it shows their heart and will to win and resurrect our season. We scored two good goals tonight, and showcased our counter attacking ability a bit.
"I'm pleased with how they've all handled this road trip. Four points from two tough away matches is good work. We're happy to book our ticket to Charlotte. But, we'll now focus on FAU and finish off the season on the front foot."
The Gamecocks scored first as Tucker Monheimer scored his first goal of the season in the eighth minute. Marshall responded when Roberts found freshman Vinicius Fernandes in the 14th minute for the equalizer. Fernandes chipped it in for his third goal of the year. The teams battled through the remaining 31 minutes and went in at the half tied at 1-1.
South Carolina outshot Marshall in the first half, 8-4, and had four shots on goal. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita stopped the other three shots to keep the match tied.
The Herd then outshot the Gamecocks in the second half, 8-5 and had three shots on goal. Ian McGrane for South Carolina made all three saves and Pita stonewalled one more shot as neither squad could break through in the second 45-minute frame.
Neither team had a shot on goal in the first overtime period, and so after 100 minutes, the match moved into double overtime.
In the second overtime period, freshman Kelan Swales took the first shot but it was blocked just one minute and 28 seconds into the frame. South Carolina had a chance on a free kick in the 105th minute, but the shot went high. Finally, with three minutes and 26 seconds remaining, junior Jonas Westmeyer found Roberts who beat the keeper for his third goal of the season. The golden goal gave Marshall the win and guaranteed the spot in the tournament.
The Herd has one final regular season match remaining on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Hoops Family Field. The opponent for Senior Night is the Florida Atlantic Owls. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The three seniors who will be honored before the match are Ben Martinez, Chris Taibi and John Pappas.
