HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team returns to Hoops Family Field for the regular season finale against the Florida Atlantic Owls, Saturday at 7 p.m., for Senior Night. The Herd's 2018 senior class consists of goalkeeper Ben Martinez and defenders Chris Taibi and John Pappas.
The Thundering Herd comes into the match with an overall record of 6-8-3 and 2-3-2 in Conference USA play. The Owls enter with a record of 2-12 and 1-5 in conference action.
The match will be broadcast live on HerdVision on CUSAtv as Jake Griffith will have the call. The match will also be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM and with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through one of the Listen Live links.
"We're looking to finish off our regular season in the strongest fashion possible," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We want to be playing well as we head to Charlotte for the tournament, so this gives us a great opportunity to gain some more momentum after the road trip last week. It's also Senior night, so we will be honoring Chris, John and Ben, so we want a performance worthy of recognizing their contribution to the program."
Marshall comes in after a 2-1, double overtime win at South Carolina on Tuesday. Freshman Vinicius Fernandes scored the first goal for the Herd and tied the match in the 14th minute. 92 minutes and 36 seconds went by before sophomore Jamil Roberts, who also assisted on the first goal, scored the golden goal in the second overtime to give Marshall the win. The victory also guaranteed the Herd a spot in the conference tournament.
Ten players have scored this season for Marshall. Junior Jonas Westmeyer (three goals and four assists) and freshman Gianni Bouzoukis (five goals) are tied for the lead in points with ten. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita made his return to net at New Mexico after missing three matches with an injury. He responded with nine saves and allowed three goals over the two match road trip. Pita has 58 saves for the season and has allowed 19 goals.
The Owls have lost the last 10-straight matches including a 4-0 loss at No. 19 Charlotte on Wednesday. Florida Atlantic is out of the conference tournament picture. The Owls have been outscored 36-11 this season, and have had six players score at least one goal. Jean Paul Rafols and Gonzalo Pena lead with three goals each. Hagay Jalon has played the majority of the season in net and has 72 saves while allowing 34 goals.
Saturday's match is the ninth all-time meeting between Marshall and Florida Atlantic, a series that dates back to 1994. FAU won the first meeting 3-0. The two schools have met each year since 2013 when the Owls became members of C-USA. Florida Atlantic won the last meeting, 2-1, in Boca Raton in 2017. The Herd last defeated FAU in 2016, 1-0, in Huntington.
Marshall can finish the season as either the fifth or sixth seed for the Conference USA Tournament, Nov. 7-11, hosted by Charlotte. A win will seal up the fifth seed for the Herd. A loss by New Mexico at No. 19 Charlotte on Saturday, and Marshall will still finish with the fifth seed, regardless of the outcome against FAU. A New Mexico win and a Marshall loss or tie, then the Herd will have the sixth seed.
