Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to WKU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team fought hard but fell in four sets to the defending Conference USA champions WKU Hilltoppers (22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-27) Friday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd is now 8-11 and 1-4 in C-USA. The Lady Toppers improve to 13-6 and 4-1 in conference play.
Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell finished the match with 19 kills while freshman Sarah Schank added 11. Freshman Gabrielle Coulter recorded 39 assists and led with 17 digs. Schank and junior Amber Weber both had 11 digs.
The first set showed what the 1,057 fans in attendance were in store for as it was a back-and-forth battle that featured 14 ties and nine lead changes. Marshall took the lead at 19-18 and held on until WKU tied the match at 22-22 and then took back the lead. The Lady Toppers scored the final five points to take the first set.
The Herd came out in the second set on fire and took an early 4-1 lead. Marshall led throughout the match with the exception of two times the set was tied at 6-6 and 8-8. A kill by Coulter gave Marshall the lead again at 9-8, and the Herd never looked back. Debell recorded seven of her 19 kills in the second set. Schank had the final kill to give Marshall the 25-22 win, and tie the match at 1-1.
Marshall jumped out to an early 4-1 lead again in the third set, however this time WKU fought back and took the lead at 12-11. The Lady Toppers then used a 5-0 run to extend the lead and held on through the rest of the set. The Herd closed the gap, trailing 20-18, but WKU ran off a final run of 5-1 to take set three, 25-19.
The fourth set was a fight to the finish with 15 ties and four lead changes. With Marshall trailing 20-17, the Herd rallied with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 20-20. WKU took another lead, but Marshall kept fighting back to tie the set. WKU had match-point at 24-22, but the Herd was not done on a kill by senior Lauren Mattmuller and a Lady Topper error to tie it up again at 24-24. WKU managed match-point again at 25-24, then a kill by Debell tied it up for the final time at 25-25. The Hilltoppers scored the final two points to take the set (27-25) and the match, 3-1.
Marshall stays at home for its next Conference USA match. The UTEP Miners come to the Cam Henderson Center on Sunday, Oct. 7 with first serve at 1 p.m.
