The Herd will play in the CofC Classic for the sixth straight season
CHARLESTON, S.C. — After not competing for the last 18 days, the Marshall tennis team hits the road for its final tournament of the fall season Friday when it begins play in the CofC Classic.
Â
The Herd will be joined in the three-day hidden dual tournament by host institution College of Charleston, Samford and Coastal Carolina.
Â
This season marks the sixth consecutive campaign that Marshall will participate in the CofC Classic. The Herd has found recent success at the invitational in previous years, with Daniela Dankanych and Brooke Lashway each going 2-1 in 2017. Derya Turhan and Maddie Silver won singles flight titles in Charleston two years ago, a performance that earned Turhan Conference USA Athlete of the Month honors.
Â
Marshall is coming off a strong showing in the ITA Atlantic Regional at Liberty. Victoria Walter won a team-best three matches during the tournament, while Liz Stefancic also managed to qualify for the singles main draw. Stefancic and Anna Smith reached the second round of the doubles tournament before falling to the eventual tournament champions, Meghan Kelley and Sofia Munera of Virginia.
Â
The Herd's youth movement has paid off through the first three tournaments of the season. Walter leads the Herd with eight singles wins during the fall season. Walter's eight singles wins are the most for a Marshall freshman during the fall season since Rachael Morales won nine during the 2013 fall season and the most for any Marshall player during the fall since Turhan won 12 matches in 2016. All of Marshall's players have at least five wins and a singles record at or above .500. Smith and Stefancic also have posted a team-high three doubles wins when paired together.
Â
SCHEDULE OF PLAY
To be determined by hidden draw/dual format.
**Marshall will play once against each team in a singles/doubles dual match format over the course of the weekend.
Â
Following the CofC Classic, the Herd will not return to the court until the spring dual match season. Marshall's first dual match is at SEC opponent Kentucky on Jan. 16. First serve for that match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
