LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marshall women's tennis team fell on the road to Louisville Friday afternoon, 5-0, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Marshall, playing shorthanded for the third straight match due to injuries, had to forfeit points at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Louisville took the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver were leading their doubles match at No. 1, 3-2, but their match went unfinished.
Marshall had leads in two of the five contested singles matches, but the leads were in matches that went unfinished. Smith had a 6-4, 3-5 lead over Aleksandra Mally at No. 1 and Anna Smith had a 6-4, 5-5 lead over Tiffany Huber. Ana Marhuenda dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Raven Neely. Mariana Humberg clinched the match for Louisville with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Marshall's Silver. In the remaining match, Marija Bogicevic fell to Abbie Pahz, 6-1, 7-5.
"Always an interesting match at Louisville, but give credit to them," head coach John Mercer said. "It's good to see us still competing to the last point. We look forward to playing at 2:30 tomorrow against Miami."
Marshall has a quick turnaround following Friday's match. The Herd travels to former Mid-American Conference foe Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. matinee match.
