WKU Tops Marshall, 77-50

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Ivy Brown and Tashia Brown combined for 47 of Western Kentucky's points as the Lady Hilltoppers defeated Marshall 77-50 Saturday afternoon in E.A. Diddle Arena in Conference USA women's basketball action.
With the win, WKU improved to 20-5 overall and regained first-place in the league standings with a 10-2 record. Marshall dropped to 8-18 and 2-11 in the league.
Ivy Brown (8-for-13 on field goals) also had a double-double with 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Raneem Elgedawy also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards on 6-for-10 shooting.
Tashia Brown had five steals, as well. Whitney Creech and Dee Givens matched Ivy Brown's four assists for top team honors.
Marshall was led by Shayna Gore's 22 points (7-for-13 shooting). The Logan native also passed Leah Scott for fifth on the school's all-time scoring list and now has 1,386 career points. She also went 8-for-8 from the free throw line and had three steals. Talequia Hamilton posted 10 points and a team-high four rebounds.
WKU led Marshall 13-10 through one quarter but pulled away in the middle section of the game, outscoring the Thundering Herd 39-14 in the second and third quarters.
Marshall did outpace the home team 26-25 in the fourth stanza.
WKU held significant edges on points in the paint (44-18), rebounds (43-20), points off turnovers (20-7) and bench points (14-4).
"One of the things Western does really well is they apply pressure so that they can get you disorganized," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "They accomplished that goal again today."
The Thundering Herd will be back in action Thursday at Rice for an 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT tip.
