Smith Extends Personal Win Streak, Marshall Falls to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Anna Smith won her third straight singles match Sunday, but it was in a losing effort for the Marshall women's tennis team, as the Herd was defeated by Maryland, 6-1, at the JTCC at the College Park Tennis Club.
Smith defeated the Terrapins' Kate Yemelyanenka in straight sets, using a second set tiebreak to win the match, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Maryland took both finished matches in doubles play, as Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver lost to Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton, 6-3, while Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda were defeated by Arnelle Sullivan and Saya Usui, 6-0. Anna Smith and Marija Bogicevic were leading Yemelyanenka and Ekaterina Tour, 4-3, when the match was abandoned.
Lashway opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets loss to Zoe Kulkarni. Marhuenda followed with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Usui. Bogicevic played a close first set against Stretton, but was defeated in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Stephanie Smith and Alexandrova played a first set tiebreak, but the Terrapin No. 1 singles player won, 7-6(4), 6-3. Silver pushed her match with Tour to a third set before falling, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. Anna Smith closed out singles play with her straight-sets win over Yemelyanenka.
Marshall has a week off before playing its next two road matches in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Herd plays UNLV on March 22 and Denver on March 23.
