ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Marshall women's tennis team finished its regular season with a 7-0 loss at the hands of Big South Conference regular season champion Winthrop Saturday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

"Tough way to end our regular season," head coach John Mercer said. "We played well in doubles today but need to continue that play into our singles matches."

Marshall had its chances to take the doubles point, but the host Eagles took two of the three matches. Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda opened play with a 6-3 loss to Ellie Burns and Aida Kelic. Anna Smith and Marija Bogicevic won their match, 7-5, over Alisa Soloveva and Tayla Van Eck, snapping a two-match skid. In the deciding match, Stephanie Smith and Maddie Silver were defeated by Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor, 7-5.

The Herd was unable to sustain momentum into singles play, dropping all six matches in straight sets to Winthrop. Marhuenda was defeated in straight sets by Kelic, 6-1, 6-0. Stephanie Smith fell to Proctor, who is 31st in the country, 6-3, 6-1. Lashway lost to Burns, 6-4, 6-1, and Anna Smith fell to Kauffman, 6-1, 6-4. Bogicevic (7-6(4), 6-1) and Silver (7-6(3), 6-1) managed to force first-set tiebreakers, but were defeated by Van Eck and Soloveva, respectively.

Up next, Marshall awaits its seed and opponent for the first round of the Conference USA Championship, which begins Thursday in Norfolk, Virginia.
