Herd finishes play at second tournament of season
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Sophomore Anna Smith and freshman Madi Ballow won singles matches Sunday to conclude Marshall's final day at the Hokie Fall Invite.
"This was a great weekend of play and just what we needed," head coach John Mercer said. "There were lots of very competitive matches, which will make us better. I thought Victoria (Walter) did well in reaching the finals of her flight and Anna won three of her four matches this weekend. Liz reached the semifinals, which was good for her. Madi did a good job bouncing back after some very physical matches to win on the final day."
Smith defeated Penn State's Gabby O'Gorman in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3), for fifth place in her singles flight. Ballow defeated Delaware's Adetayo Adetunji in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in a consolation bracket match.
Victoria Walter's singles run ended in the championship match of her flight, where she fell in straight sets to Iowa State's Annabella Bonadonona, 6-0, 6-4. Liz Stefancic lost in the third-place match of her flight to Appalachian State's Kate Earnhardt in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Marshall went 0-2 in doubles play Sunday, as Walter and Stefancic fell to Penn State's Olivia Rohrbacher and Olivia Ryan in the consolation finals of their flight, 8-6. Smith and Ballow were defeated by Radford's Malin Falk and Drousile Dzeubou, 8-5.
