Endowment will support the Marshall men's basketball program
The Big Green Scholarship Foundation, the fundraising arm of Marshall University athletics, has announced an endowed scholarship has been established by Lois W. Doran in the name of her late husband, Weldon C. Doran, Jr., a Marshall alumnus. Weldon passed away in June of 2018 and his scholarship will support the Thundering Herd men's basketball program.
As a prep school student at Bob Jones Academy in Greenville, South Carolina, Weldon was a gifted athlete. He played basketball throughout the South in the 1950s in the Industrial League and later served for three years during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corps. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Huntington, West Virginia, to complete his Geology degree from Marshall.
When asked what her motivation was for establishing the scholarship, Mrs. Doran said, "Marshall was a big part of my husband's life. He loved Marshall."
