In 2026, Marshall Athletics, community will Herd Together in pursuit of excellence
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The following is a New Year's Day message from Marshall Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald J. Harrison:
Dear Herd Fans,
As we begin a new year, I am energized and deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead Marshall Athletics into 2026. I am excited to work alongside our coaches, staff, and University leadership as we continue building an exceptional student-athlete experience — one that rivals the very best in the country — while delivering a fan experience worthy of the passion and pride of Herd Nation.
I am especially proud to serve under the leadership of President Brad Smith. His bold vision and innovative approach have positioned Marshall University for a strong and sustainable future. Our partnership, along with the collaborative leadership of the University cabinet, ensures we are aligned in purpose, values, and ambition. Together, we are not simply focused on being good; we are committed to being great!
Passion and pride have always fueled Marshall Athletics. But in today's rapidly evolving landscape, they must be matched with strategic vision, thoughtful planning, meaningful dialogue, and responsible investment. Most importantly, progress requires all of us. We are intentionally building a department rooted in our Herd Mentality — one that values diverse perspectives, deep experience, accountability, and the shared belief that we are strongest when we move forward together.
I am fully aware of the challenges facing intercollegiate athletics. This moment demands clarity, resolve, and adaptability. But when has adversity ever defined Marshall? A herd of bison doesn't run from the storm; it walks into it and stands firm. That resilience is in our DNA, and it will guide us forward.
You will soon hear more about new initiatives designed to strengthen our foundation — projects focused on expanding revenue opportunities, enhancing customer engagement, and elevating the overall fan experience. We will also continue to grow the Big Green Foundation by expanding membership, increasing unrestricted support, and honoring our traditions while ensuring Marshall Athletics remains accessible and deeply connected to the Huntington community and the surrounding region.
At the center of everything we do are our student-athletes. We are advancing two critical priorities. First, we are investing in services and programming that create an exceptional on-campus experience while preparing our student-athletes for life beyond Marshall. Whether they are here for one year or five, they will leave better equipped for success and proud of their time as members of The Herd.
Second, we will continue to strengthen how we recruit, develop, and retain those who wear the Kelly Green and White. We believe we can win in the classroom, in the community, in student-athlete well-being, and in competition. Achieving that requires attracting and retaining individuals who share our values and ensuring our coaches have the resources necessary to compete for Sun Belt championships in this new era of college athletics.
There is work ahead — but the momentum is real, the vision is clear, and the path forward is in front of us. In 2026, we will Herd Together - united in purpose and relentless in our pursuit of excellence.
All in all, it remains a great time to Run with The Herd! The future is bright for our community, our University, and Marshall Athletics.
Go Herd!
Gerald J. Harrison
