Thundering Herd Welcomes Lady Techsters on Thursday

Tip time set for 6 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team returns to action Thursday evening when it hosts Louisiana Tech. Tipoff against the Lady Techsters is set for 6 p.m. ET in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd enters the game with a record of 10-8 and 4-1 in Conference USA play. The Lady Techsters are 10-9 and 2-4 in the league.
The game will be broadcast on CUSA.tv and will also be carried on WMUL's (88.1 FM) Cutting Edge Sports Radio Network where it can be accessed through one of the Listen Live links at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
Last Time Out
Marshall's Shayna Gore made six 3-pointers and erupted for 19 of her 26 points in the second half as the visiting Thundering Herd smashed host FIU 86-58 Saturday afternoon at Ocean Bank Convention Center.
Marshall improved to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA, while FIU dropped to 3-16 and 0-6 in league play.
The victory gave Marshall its best Conference USA start since 2008-09, when the Thundering Herd got out to a 5-1 mark. The victory also gave MU just its second road C-USA sweep in the last 10 seasons and eclipsed the program's overall and league win mark from a season ago.
Gore had five assists and no turnovers to go with three steals. Taylor Porter tied a career-high with eight rebounds en route to 11 points, a total that was equaled by Princess Clemons off the bench. Khadaijia Brooks had 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting and also had four helpers.
FIU was led by Ce'Nara Skanes' 18 points (6-for-8) and nine rebounds (eight offensive). Chelsea Guimaraes had 14 points.
Marshall limited the Panthers to just a 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the field and shot 54.4 percent (31-for-57) itself. The Thundering Herd was outstanding from the arc as well, connecting on 13-for-28 (46.4 percent).
Marshall did most of its damage in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 31-13 on the strength of a 7-for-8 effort from the perimeter.
"This is going to be a happy plane back to Huntington," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "Shayna was outstanding today, but you can really say that about our entire team. The run in the third quarter was big and that can be attributed to Gore and Brooks."
Good Start
With a win Thursday vs. Louisiana Tech, Marshall would improve to 5-1 in Conference USA, the best league start for the program since the Thundering Herd began with that same mark in 2008-09. The last time the Thundering Herd had a better start in league play was the 1988-89 campaign that saw MU begin 8-0 in the Southern Conference before finishing 9-1.

Shayna Gore leads the team with 36 steals and has recorded at least one in 16 of 18 games. Kristen Mayo is next with 28 steals. Taylor Porter (25) and Kia Sivils (19) are right behind and both had a season-high five steals with Porter against Bluefield State and Sivils at Appalachian State. After hitting two more baskets in the game, Gore moved into seventh all-time passing Sheila Johnson (1987-91). Gore is now third with 608 after the FAU contest. The senior from Logan, W.Va., still has quite a way to go before possibly reaching second all-time as Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Kristina Behnfeldt (1995-99) has 664. Fellow Hall of Famer Karen Pelphrey (1982-86) is the program's all-time leader with 1,175.
Moving on up the Herd Ranks
Shayna Gore put up a career-best performance with 34 points against Bowling Green and moved into fourth place all-time in Marshall scoring history. Gore surpassed former Herd great Tynikki Crook (2007-11) in the third quarter and finished the game at 1,485 career points. Gore buried six 3-pointers, the third time in her career with six or more, in helping to move ahead of Crook.
Gore continued her move up the scoring column with 24 points in the win over Tennessee State (12/15) to move into third place all-time, passing Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06). She now has 1,769 points for her career. Next up in second place is another Herd Hall of Famer in Kristina Behnfeldt (1995-99) with 2,117, and whose number hangs in the rafters in the Cam Henderson Center.
