Thundering Herd moves to 2-0 in league play
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Kristen Mayo converted a driving baseline layup with 3.1 seconds left to lift host Marshall to a 63-62 win over Charlotte Saturday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center. The win snapped a 10-game winning streak by the 49ers in the series between the two schools (now 11-2 Charlotte).
The Thundering Herd improved to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA, while the 49ers dropped to 8-6 and 0-2 in the league.
Marshall was led by Shayna Gore's 18 points (7-for-14 FGs, 4-7 on 3-pointers) and Khadaijia Brooks contributed 11. Freshman Kia Sivils came up big off the bench for the home team (which outscored Charlotte 14-4) with eight points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes. Princess Clemons also posted three assists.
Charlotte had four players in double digits, paced by 19 from Laia Raventos, whose game-winning corner 3-point attempt sailed long. She also finished with seven assists and three steals. Jade Phillips had 15 points and six rebounds, as did Ka'Neeshia Brown in just nine minutes. Mariah Linney went for 13 points and Octavia Jett-Wilson chipped in 11 points and five assists.
Charlotte jumped to an early eight-point lead (19-11) on a Linney triple with 1:20 left in the first quarter. Marshall, though, battled back and kept it a one-possession contest, nosing ahead by four (42-38) on a Clemons layup with 2:33 left in the third stanza.
The game went into the final minute tied at 58 until Raventos hit a jumper with 25 seconds left to put the 49ers up by two (60-58). That advantage was short-lived, however, as Marshall's Gore drilled a triple from the right wing to put the Thundering Herd back ahead 61-60.
Phillips then scored on a layup off Raventos' entry pass to nudge the 49ers in front with eight seconds left, which set up the possession that led to Mayo's heroics.
The 49ers controlled the glass 39-33, but could muster just two second chance points. Marshall also turned over the visitors 17 times.
The game was tied for 18 minutes and 13 seconds.
"That's a really good win against a team that was ready to go," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "They were ready to play us and we took a really good punch from them. I thought we were disjointed for a lot of the game and then, in the fourth quarter, we just buckled down and were much more solid. We fought together and got some really big shots from a lot of people."
The Thundering Herd will be back in action Saturday when it travels to WKU (8-8, 2-0) for a 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT tip. The Hilltoppers downed ODU (9-5, 0-2) 75-60 Saturday at home.
