MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall volleyball team fell in five sets (24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 25-19, 9-15) at Middle Tennessee, Friday night.

The Thundering Herd is now 12-6 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA. The Blue Raiders improve to 7-11 and 1-3 in conference play.

"We battled against a really good MTSU team," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "They showed up, defended well and executed when it mattered. We learned a lot tonight and are continuing to grow every day. I'm proud of what our team did, we're locked in to a long tough journey ahead and excited for each opportunity."

Three players for Marshall finished with double-digit kills as redshirt junior Ciara Debell led with 14. Sophomore Joelle Coulter was next with 12 and sophomore Sarah Schank had 11. Freshman Megan Taylor had a career-high six. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter (25) and junior Sydney Lostumo (24) combined for 49 assists.

The Herd tallied 19 total blocks in the contest. It was the 11th match of the season that Marshall recorded double-digit blocks. Junior Destiny Leon led with eight total rejections. Sophomore Isa Dostal added six and sophomore Mion Weldon tallied five.

Senior libero Amber Weber added 22 more digs to her career total. Debell was next with 14 as G. Coulter had 13 and Lostumo had a career-best 11 digs.

The match began as a battle right from the start as the teams traded points back-and-forth, however the Blue Raiders took back the lead at 5-4 and held it until late in the set. Marshall battled back several times to bring the deficit back to one point and even tied the set at 24-24. Middle Tennessee closed it out with the last two points.

The second set was even more of a battle as there were 15 ties and five lead changes. Marshall took the lead at 12-11 but MTSU fought back and the teams traded points again. Schank came through with two late kills in the set to help give the Herd the win and tie the match at 1-1.

The Blue Raiders took an early lead in the third set, and again Marshall returned fire to try and stay in it. The third period featured eight ties and four lead changes. The score was tied for the last time at 17-17 before MTSU moved on for the win. The Herd trailed 2-1.

The fourth set belonged to Marshall as nine of the Herd's 19 blocks came in the match-tying set. The Herd came through with back-to-back blocks twice late in the set to help pull away and force a fifth set.

Middle Tennessee took control in the fifth and closed out the match to earn its first conference win of the year.

The Herd returns to the Cam Henderson Center with matches against No. 21 Rice on Oct. 18, and North Texas on Oct. 20.
